Rare Martin Maier Dome Top Slat Trunk
|
TK-700 is a rare Martin Maier Dome Top Slat Trunk
This is a rare and very hard to find dome top slat trunk made by Martin Maier &
Company of Detroit, Michigan is from the 1885 to 1895 period.
According to research completed by Marvin Miller of "This Old Trunk", this style
trunk was advertised in one of Martin Maier's catalogs as a Rustic trunk
covered entirely of hardwood slats. Superior quality and based on the Excelsior
trunk patent of 1868. Maier established his trunk company in 1865 after serving
in the Civil War and later obtained the sole rights to manufacture slat trunks in
the Midwest area. Maier developed their distinctive narrow slat style trunk
sometime in the late 1870's and examples are hard to find. These are made of
two different woods, with the light and darker grain, probably of oak or ash and
walnut or another darker wood.
The fancy corner and slat braces on this trunk have a beautiful design. There
are no breaks in the wood but there are a couple of nicks from over 100 years
of use.
All wood lift out tray with hat and parasol compartments. The inside bottom is
paper covered but can be cleaned out to the bare wood or lined with fabric if
desired.
Original style heavy stitched leather handles have been replaced. Sorry, there
is no key for the lock.
This trunk is very heavy and strong, and it measures 33" L x 21" D x 27" H. Pick
up is always welcome or I can ship this beautiful antique trunk with insurance to
the 48 contiguous states for $80.
The cost of the rare Martin Maier dome top slat trunk is $1,595.
